SAASL Competition History & Winners in South Australia

Master Builders SA Born 2 Build Challenge Cup

First played in 1966, the Challenge Cup is one of the most prestigious competitions in the South Australian Amateur Soccer League calendar. Open to all senior (first) teams across the league, this historic tournament runs throughout the season and is played in a thrilling knockout format one loss and you’re out, one win and you’re through.

For 39 years, from 1966 to 2005, the Challenge Cup was proudly sponsored by Coca-Cola, marking the longest-running sponsorship of any soccer competition in South Australia.

Each round is determined by random draw, adding to the drama and unpredictability that fans and players alike have come to love. The competition culminates in the grand Cup Final, held as a highlight event on the league calendar, typically on the last Sunday in September where glory is up for grabs and legacies are made.

Since 2008, the standout performer in the Cup Final is awarded the Templin Medal, in honour of Mr. Templin’s remarkable contribution and service to the league.

Templin Medal

Introduced in 2008, the Templin Medal is awarded to the Player of the Match in the Challenge Cup Final. Named in honour of Rudi Templin, the medal recognises his outstanding service to the South Australian Amateur Soccer League and his lifelong dedication to the game.

Mr Templin was inducted into the South Australian Soccer Hall of Fame (Roll of Honour – Meritorious Contribution) in 2006 for his contributions as both a player and administrator. A long-time member of the SAASL Management Committee, he remained active until the end of the 2009 season. His work in the early years helped lay the foundation for the strength and success of the league as it exists today.

Rudi migrated from Frankfurt, Germany, to Australia in 1954. By the 1960s, he was already making an impact as Secretary of the SA Tramways Soccer Club.

In 1965, he became a founding member and treasurer of the Sunday Industrial Soccer League. The following year, he led the initiative to rename the competition to the South Australian Amateur Soccer League.

Mr Templin served as the League’s General Secretary from 1966 to 1970, and then as President from 1971 to 1977. In 2001, he returned to the League as a Committee Member, continuing his legacy of service. He was awarded Life Membership in 1969 in recognition of his lasting contributions.

Rudi’s name also lives on through the Templin Cup, a pre-season tournament that continues to honour his legacy.

Alex Cichanowski Shield

Introduced in 1984, the Alex Cichanowski Shield was created as a pre-season match between the Sunday First Division Champions and the Coca-Cola Cup Winners. The inaugural Shield match saw Tea Tree Gully defeat Salisbury Inter. Over time, the format evolved into a contest between the Sunday Premier and Saturday Premier Division winners from the previous season, while continuing as a season-opening fixture.

The Shield honours Alex Cichanowski, a key figure in the development and stability of amateur soccer in South Australia.

Born in Belarus in 1944, Alex migrated to Australia in 1952. He became involved with USC Lion Soccer Club as a player and coach and later represented the club at SAASL meetings. In 1971, during a time of financial hardship for the League, he stepped up to become General Secretary. His leadership helped guide the SAASL through a challenging period, establishing a financially sustainable, low-cost competition that allowed the League to grow into the largest senior amateur men’s competition in the state.

In the early years, the League’s administration was run from Alex’s home, with the support of his wife Ann and the Management Committee. As the League expanded, he negotiated with the SASF to move the office to Hindmarsh Stadium. With the stadium’s redevelopment in 1992, the administration relocated to Port Road, before finally finding a permanent home in 1996. Under Mr Cichanowski’s guidance, the SAASL headquarters were established at Grange Reserve, in partnership with the Grange Cricket Club and the City of Charles Sturt.

Mr Cichanowski remained General Secretary of the SAASL until his passing in December 2017. He was deeply respected throughout the soccer community and is remembered not only for his service, but for his integrity, dedication, and generosity. A true gentleman whose legacy continues to shape the League today.

In recognition of his extraordinary contribution to the game, the Player of the Match in the Alex Cichanowski Shield is awarded the Alex Cichanowski Medal. This honour celebrates not only individual excellence on the field, but also the values that Mr Cichanowski embodied, dedication, leadership, and a deep commitment to the growth of the game in South Australia.

H. J. Templin Cup

Reintroduced in 2015, the H.J. Templin Cup is a pre-season invitational competition that brings together selected amateur clubs ahead of the league season. The Cup honours H.J. (Rudi) Templin, whose contributions helped shape the foundation and spirit of amateur football in South Australia.

Originally introduced in 1975, the Templin Cup was held during summer or pre-season, with participation by invitation. While all amateur clubs could apply, usually only between eight and twelve teams were selected to compete. Ten leading clubs were invited in the inaugural year, with M.U. Findon defeating Parafield Gardens in the final.

Rudi Templin was a founding member and Treasurer of the Sunday Industrial League in 1965. With a vision for greater inclusivity and community engagement, he led the effort to rename the competition the South Australian Amateur Soccer League in 1966.

Mr Templin served as General Secretary from 1966 to 1970 and as President from 1971 to 1977. He later returned to serve on the SAASL Committee from 2001 to 2009. In recognition of his lifelong dedication to the game as both a player and administrator, he was inducted into the South Australian Soccer Hall of Fame (Roll of Honour – Meritorious Contribution) in 2016.

Reserve Cup

First played in 1968, the Reserve Cup is a long standing competition involving all League reserve-grade teams. Played throughout the season, the tournament follows a knockout format, with losing teams eliminated and winners progressing to the next round. Each round is determined by random draw, adding an extra layer of unpredictability and excitement.

The competition culminates in the Reserve Cup Final, held as part of the prestigious Cup Final Day, typically staged on the last Sunday in September.

Since 2008, the standout performer in the Reserve Cup Final has been awarded the Coppola Medal, in honour of Mr Don Coppola’s outstanding contribution to the SAASL. Mr Coppola served on the League’s board, chaired the Disciplinary Committee, and was awarded SAASL Life Membership in 1977 for his dedication and service to the game.

Cox Medal - Sunday Division 2 - Player of the Year

Named in honour of Robert (Bob) Cox, the Cox Medal is awarded to the Player of the Year in the Sunday Division 2 competition. The award recognises Mr Cox’s outstanding service to the South Australian Amateur Soccer League across more than four decades.

Mr Cox contributed to the game as a player, coach, and administrator. He represented South Australia as a player on several occasions, and in 1967, was voted the League’s Best and Fairest — his highest individual honour on the field.

In 1969, Mr Cox took on the role of Accident Fund Secretary, a position he held until the end of the 2010 season. He was elected to the SAASL Board of Management in 1983 and awarded Life Membership in 1972 in recognition of his long-standing commitment to the League.

Mr Cox remained a dedicated member of the SAASL Management Committee until his passing at the end of the 2010 season. He continued to support the League through its transition to a new administration structure following his retirement from full-time employment. His tireless contribution in all aspects of the game helped shape the League into the success it is today.

Highly respected by all who knew him, Mr Cox was a true gentleman whose presence and guidance are deeply missed.

The Gossland Medal honours the legacy of Iain Gossland, whose service to amateur football in South Australia spanned nearly three decades and left a lasting impact on the League and beyond.

Mr Gossland was a member of the SAASL Management Committee from 1975 to 2002 and served as President from 1978 to 1996. During his leadership, he oversaw significant developments within the League, including the opening of the SAASL Administration Complex at Grange Recreation Reserve in 1996.

A strong advocate for the role of referees in the game, Mr Gossland initiated the formation of the SA Amateur League Referees Association in 1978. He was appointed its Interim Chairman and served as Referee Appointments Secretary from 1978 to 1993.
