About SAASL

The South Australian Amateur Soccer League have a proud, rich history built on fairness, inclusivity and a genuine love of the game of soccer. From our humble beginnings in 1965, the league has expanded and strengthened to become the major organisation body for non-professional soccer in South Australia. It is the State’s largest management body for Senior Level Amateur Soccer.

Our History

In 1965, the Sunday Industrial Soccer League was formed as an organised league for work and company soccer teams in the Northern areas of Elizabeth & Salisbury to play on Sundays. At the end of its first season, the Sunday Industrial Soccer League changed its name to the ‘South Australian Amateur Soccer League’ as suggested by H.J (Rudi) Templin. The intention behind this move was to widen the scope for participation in the league by opening it up to not only works teams but also individual groups and districts. This proved an extremely wise move as the number of teams registered to participate increased dramatically in the years to come.



Since 1965, the league has continued to expand and strengthen, taking in more and more regions and teams. The League now encompasses and stretches from Port Pirie in the north to Victor Harbor in the south and from Murray Bridge in the east all the way to the coast.

Alex — Grange, SA — SAASL

A. (Alex) Cichanowski 

Hall of Honour - Outstanding Contribution (2003)

He migrated to Australia in 1952 from Pinsk, Belarus. Contributed to the game of soccer as a player, coach and administrator. Also a Life Member of the SAASL and SASF. Officiated as General Secretary of the South Australian Amateur Soccer League for a record 42 years, also Chairman of the SASF for seven years and member of many committees, including the Executive Board. Tour Leader of SA State Teams to India, Penang and Vanuatu.

W.G. (Freddie) Pine

Roll of Honour - Outstanding Contribution (2003)

He migrated to Australia in 1960 from Abertgwinwyth, Neath, Glamorgan, Wales. Contributed to the game of soccer as a player, trainer, administrator and soccer writer and was also a Life Member of Elizabeth Vale SC. Founder and first President of the Sunday Industrial Soccer League, later known as the South Australian Amateur Soccer League. He also officiated as Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer and Executive Member of Elizabeth Vale SC. 

Bob — Grange, SA — SAASL

R.J. (Bob) Cox

Roll of Honour - Meritorious Contribution (2005)

He migrated to Australia in 1964 from London, England. Contributed to soccer as a player and administrator and was also a Life Member of the South Australian Amateur Soccer League. 21 Represented SAASL as a player and was Player of the Year 1967. An official with the SAASL as Vice Chairman, Secretary of the Accident Fund (over 40 years) and Executive Member (27 years), also the coordinator for match results, Player of the Year votes and League Tables. He was associated with Soccer in South Australia for over 40 years. 

Rudi — Grange, SA — SAASL

H.J. (Rudi) Templin

Roll of Honour - Meritorious Contribution (2006)

He migrated to Australia in 1954 from Frankfurt, Germany. He contributed to the game of soccer as a player and administrator, also a Life Member of SAASL. A founder member and Treasurer of the Sunday Industrial Soccer League in 1965, General Secretary SAASL 1966 to 1970 and appointed as the first Senior Vice President of the Australian Amateur Soccer Association in 1969. Secretary SA Tramways Soccer Club in the 1960s, President SAASL 1971 to 1977, and served as a member of the SAASL Management Committee. He played for Victoria SC, SA Tramways and Adelaide Fijians and was associated with the game in South Australia for 55 years. 

Iain — Grange, SA — SAASL

W.I.S. (Iain) Gossland 

Roll of Honour - Distinguished Contribution (2008)

Iain migrated to Australia in 1967 from Glasgow, Scotland. He contributed to soccer as an Administrator, Life Member SAASL and SASF. Member of the SAASL Management Committee 1975 to 2002, President 1978 to 1996, initiated the formation of the SA Amateur League Referees Association in 1978, appointed Interim Chairman 1978 and Referee Appointments Secretary 1978 to 1993. Member of the SASF Board 1982 to 1991 and member of the SASF Players Appeals Committee in 1992, First President of the Australian (National) Amateur Soccer Association 1977. Associated with the game of soccer in South Australia since 1973.
